The sun was setting and all you could see was a brim of light peering out of the horizon. We continued walking between the headstones, searching for the right name. “Are you sure she’s buried here?” I asked. “Yep. I found an old newspaper clipping in a file from the office. She died five years ago in a bus accident.” My husband drew up the zip of his jacket as a crisp wind blew our way. “Maybe it’s a mistake.” “It’s not a mis – look! Here it is!” He squatted next to a headstone decorated with moss and vines. I shuffled beside him until I could read its words. Blood drained from my face. “No! It can’t be. No, no.” He stood up and placed an arm around me. “I’m so sorry, honey.” “No…this is a mistake – it’s not true…she can’t be dead.” But it was true. The baby I had given up as a teenager had died. I started to cry. This was my last chance to get my ex back after all these years. The medicine man had told me that in order for the lovespell to work, I needed the blood of the child we had conceived together. If the child was dead, then so was all hope – unless…I spotted a shovel resting on a nearby tree. “Dig up the body.” “What? Why? Honey, are you okay? ” “I said, dig it up.”
